Hidcote Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia 'Hidcote')
'Hidcote' is a striking, compact English lavender with some of the darkest, richest violet-blue flowers available. Its blooms are intensely fragrant and ideal for drying and crafting. Though it blooms slightly later than 'Munstead', it makes a bolder visual and aromatic impact, especially in ornamental borders and herbal projects where color and scent retention are key.
Key Characteristics
-
Later Bloomer with Intensely Colored Flowers
Begins blooming in late June or early July-just after 'Munstead'-but with a more saturated, darker purple flower that stands out dramatically in the garden. -
More Intense Fragrance
Contains a higher essential oil content, making it better suited for strong-scented herbal sachets, oils, and potpourri. Best choice when you want maximum fragrance impact. -
Ideal for Crafting and Dried Use
The deep color holds beautifully when dried, and the buds are highly aromatic. Perfect for wreaths, lavender bundles, and long-lasting herbal preparations. -
Darker, More Formal Look
The deep violet flowers and silver-gray foliage offer a bolder contrast than Munstead, suiting formal gardens, symmetrical plantings, or places where you want high visual impact. -
Tolerant and Hardy
Equally drought-tolerant and deer-resistant, but excels when planted in gravelly, sharply drained soils with good air circulation.
