Fruit Tree Rootstock & Scion

Many fruit and nut trees are created through grafting, a simple but powerful technique that joins two plants so they grow as one. Each grafted tree has two parts:

Rootstock – the lower portion of the plant that forms the roots and often part of the trunk. Rootstock influences tree size, vigor, disease resistance, soil adaptability, and overall resilience.

Scion – a cutting from a specific fruit variety that becomes the top of the tree. The scion determines the fruit type, flavor, harvest time, and other variety traits.

To graft a tree, a piece of scion wood is cut and carefully joined to a compatible rootstock so their living tissue (called the cambium) lines up. The union is then secured with tape or grafting compound while the tissues heal and fuse together. Once the graft takes, the rootstock provides the root system and strength, while the scion grows into the fruiting portion of the tree. Check out this great video to learn more about how to graft fruit trees.

Get a head start on your orchard by planting rootstocks only this year and planning to graft scion on to it next year!

Grafting allows growers to combine the best traits of both plants—pairing great fruit varieties with root systems chosen for size control, soil conditions, or disease resistance.
