Apricot, Harogem (Prunus armeniaca ‘Harogem’)
A standout late-blooming apricot bred in Canada, Harogem is prized for its cold hardiness, disease resistance, and large, juicy fruit. This freestone variety offers golden-orange apricots with a red blush and firm, aromatic flesh — excellent for fresh eating, drying, canning, or baking. Because it blooms later than most apricots, Harogem is less vulnerable to damaging spring frosts, making it an excellent choice for northern growers and those in marginal apricot climates. It’s also resistant to bacterial canker, a common apricot disease in humid regions.
In the landscape, Harogem integrates beautifully into food forests, orchard edges, or mixed fruit tree guilds. It thrives in full sun with well-drained soil and prefers drier spring conditions during bloom. Like most apricots, it’s largely self-fruitful but will benefit from the presence of another apricot nearby for improved yields.
Key Characteristics
-
Cold-hardy and late-blooming
Bred in Ontario, Harogem is exceptionally well-suited for northern growers. Its late bloom time helps avoid late frosts that often damage earlier apricot varieties, especially in USDA zones 5–7. -
Excellent fruit quality
The large, firm fruits have rich, sweet flavor and a beautiful red blush. Freestone and aromatic, they're perfect for fresh eating, drying, preserving, or baking into pastries and tarts. -
Disease resistance for healthier trees
Notably resistant to bacterial canker and brown rot, Harogem requires less chemical input and is a smart choice for organic and low-spray orchards in humid areas. -
Versatile role in permaculture systems
Harogem fits well into diverse permaculture designs. Use it in the tree layer of food forests, in fruit tree guilds, or as a productive anchor in a silvopasture edge planting. Combine with nitrogen-fixing shrubs and aromatic herbs to support pest resistance and pollination. -
Pollination notes
While Harogem is considered self-fruitful, cross-pollination with another late-blooming apricot (such as Harcot) may boost yields. It does not cross-pollinate with plums or peaches.
