Sky Blue Aster (Symphyotrichum oolentangiense)
Sky Blue Aster is a graceful native perennial with branching sprays of lavender-blue flowers that arrive during one of the most important feeding periods of the year for pollinators. Native to prairies, savannas, glades, and open woodlands of central and eastern North America, it thrives in sunny, relatively dry soils where many moisture-loving asters struggle. Its blue flowers are especially striking woven through warm-toned native grasses and goldenrods, creating a classic autumn prairie combination with both visual and ecological depth.
Key Characteristics
Late-season fuel for bees and migrating butterflies
Lavender-blue flower heads with golden centers provide nectar and pollen from late summer into fall. Bumble bees, sweat bees, mining bees, small carpenter bees, skippers, and numerous butterflies visit the flowers, while migrating Monarchs may use asters as autumn nectar sources. Planting Sky Blue Aster alongside goldenrods creates a particularly productive late-season forage patch with complementary flower forms.
A larval host that works before it ever flowers
Native asters support caterpillars as well as adult pollinators. Symphyotrichum species are used by butterflies including Pearl Crescent (Phyciodes tharos) and Silvery Checkerspot (Chlosyne nycteis), along with numerous native moths. Leaving stems and nearby leaf litter through winter retains shelter and overwintering habitat rather than removing this part of the food web during fall cleanup.
Built for dry prairie and savanna conditions
Sky Blue Aster is particularly useful in lean, well-drained soils and tolerates drought well once established. Its natural habitats include dry prairies, rocky openings, savannas, and open woodland edges, making it an excellent choice for low-water native gardens, meadow restorations, and sunny slopes. Rich soil or excessive fertilizer can produce overly lush growth, so this is one perennial that generally performs better without pampering.
Blue flowers transform warm-toned fall plantings
True blue is relatively uncommon in the autumn prairie, and Sky Blue Aster's lavender-blue rays create beautiful contrast with yellow goldenrods and copper-colored grasses. Combine it with Little Bluestem, Prairie Dropseed, Side-oats Grama, Heath Aster, Rough Blazing Star, and dry-site goldenrods for a layered planting that progresses naturally from summer into autumn.
