Missouri Evening Primrose (Oenothera macrocarpa syn. Oenothera missouriensis)
Missouri Evening Primrose is one of North America's most spectacular native wildflowers, producing enormous lemon-yellow blooms that can reach 4–5 inches across. Native to the prairies, glades, and rocky outcrops of the central United States, this low-growing perennial is exceptionally drought tolerant and thrives in challenging conditions where many plants struggle. Its large flowers open in the evening and remain attractive through the following day, creating a dramatic display that supports a diverse array of pollinators.
Key Characteristics
Massive flowers adapted for native pollinators
Few native perennials produce flowers as large as Missouri Evening Primrose. The blooms are especially attractive to sphinx moths and other nighttime pollinators that are drawn to their bright color and evening-opening habit. During daylight hours, native bees continue to visit the flowers for pollen and nectar.
Outstanding drought tolerance for dry landscapes
Native to rocky prairies and limestone glades, this species thrives in hot, dry conditions and poor soils. Its deep root system allows it to persist through drought while maintaining attractive foliage and abundant blooms, making it an excellent choice for xeriscapes and low-input landscapes.
Ground-hugging habit for slopes and rock gardens
The sprawling stems form attractive mats of blue-green foliage that remain low to the ground. This growth habit makes Missouri Evening Primrose particularly useful for rock gardens, retaining walls, dry slopes, and the front edges of native plantings.
Long bloom season with ecological value
Flowers are produced continuously over much of the summer, providing an extended nectar source during periods when prairie resources may be limited. The blooms also support specialist native insects associated with evening primrose species.
