Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum)
Boneset is a native perennial medicinal herb historically valued for its use in treating fevers and supporting the immune system. Found in moist meadows, streambanks, and wetlands, it produces clusters of small white flowers that attract a wide range of pollinators. Its distinctive perfoliate leaves—appearing as though the stem passes directly through them—make it easy to identify and add structural interest to native plantings.
Key Characteristics
Traditional fever and immune-support herb
Boneset has a long history of use in North American herbalism, especially for treating fevers, flu, and colds—earning its name from its use during “breakbone fever” (dengue). The aerial parts are typically used in teas or tinctures to stimulate sweating and support immune response. It is a strong, bitter herb and is generally used in small amounts.
Excellent late-season pollinator plant
Blooming in mid to late summer, boneset provides an important nectar source for bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects when many earlier plants have faded. It is especially attractive to native bees and a variety of butterfly species.
Larval host and habitat plant for native insects
Boneset serves as a larval host for certain moth species, including the Clymene moth (Haploa clymene). Its presence supports insect life cycles beyond nectar feeding, contributing to a more complete habitat system.
Moisture-loving native for wetland and restoration systems
Boneset thrives in moist to wet soils and is well-suited for rain gardens, streambanks, and low-lying areas. Its fibrous root system helps stabilize soil and makes it useful for erosion control and restoration projects in wetter environments.
