Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum)

Spider Plant is a durable, adaptable perennial recognized by its arching, strap-like foliage and cascading stems filled with miniature plantlets. Native to tropical and southern Africa, it has become a classic houseplant because it tolerates a wider range of indoor conditions than many tropical species. Mature plants develop graceful flowering runners that eventually produce easily rooted "spiderettes," allowing one plant to become a whole collection. It is particularly effective in hanging baskets, elevated containers, bright indoor spaces, and shaded outdoor patios during warm weather.

Key Characteristics

Cascading plantlets create its signature form
Mature Spider Plants send out long, arching stolons bearing small white flowers followed by clusters of miniature plants. These spiderettes can remain attached for a cascading display or be rooted to produce new plants. For propagation, place a developing plantlet against moist potting mix until roots establish, then separate it from the parent.

Exceptionally adaptable to indoor growing conditions
Spider Plant prefers bright, indirect light but tolerates considerably lower light, although growth and variegation may become less vigorous. Its fleshy roots store water, giving established plants some resilience if watering is occasionally missed. This combination makes it useful for homes, offices, classrooms, and other indoor environments.

Excellent for hanging baskets and vertical greenery
Few houseplants display the plant's growth habit as effectively as an elevated container. Arching foliage softens shelves and plant stands, while mature runners cascade below the pot with flowers and plantlets. Simple care with a few useful tricks
Allow the upper layer of potting mix to dry slightly before watering again rather than keeping roots constantly saturated. Brown leaf tips can result from inconsistent watering, dry air, salt accumulation, or sensitivity to minerals in water. Periodically flushing container soil and avoiding excessive fertilizer can help maintain clean, healthy foliage.
