Solar Fancy Large-Flowered Coreopsis (Coreopsis grandiflora 'Solar Fancy')
Solar Fancy Coreopsis is a compact, long-blooming perennial distinguished by brilliant golden-yellow flowers splashed with deep burgundy-red around the center. A cultivated selection of a North American native species, it delivers months of accessible nectar and pollen on a tidy plant that fits easily into smaller pollinator gardens, sunny borders, meadow-inspired plantings, and containers. Its tolerance of heat, drought, and relatively lean soils makes it particularly useful for creating colorful, low-input plantings without relying on rich soil or frequent irrigation.
Key Characteristics
Golden flowers painted with burgundy-red
Solar Fancy's flowers combine bright yellow petals with irregular wine-red markings surrounding a golden central disk, giving each bloom a striking two-tone appearance. The compact habit keeps the flowers concentrated close together, creating a strong block of color without the height of many prairie perennials. It works especially well toward the front of borders and along sunny pathways.
Open flowers make feeding easy for small pollinators
Unlike deep tubular flowers that favor long-tongued visitors, Coreopsis presents nectar and pollen on open composite flower heads that many insects can readily access. Small native bees, sweat bees, syrphid flies, butterflies, and other beneficial insects visit the flowers. Planting several together creates a concentrated foraging patch and makes the unusual bicolored flowers much more visually effective.
Deadheading turns one bloom cycle into many
Solar Fancy naturally has a long flowering period, but removing spent flowers before substantial seed development can encourage additional buds. Shearing plants lightly after the first major flush can stimulate fresh foliage and another round of flowers. Toward autumn, leave some final seed heads intact for seed-eating birds and winter structure.
Excellent for hot, sunny, lower-input gardens
Once established, Solar Fancy handles summer heat and periodic drought remarkably well. It fits naturally into cottage gardens, pollinator borders, rock gardens, meadow-inspired designs, and the sunny herbaceous layer of larger landscapes. Pair it with Little Bluestem, Prairie Dropseed, coneflowers, blazing stars, bee balms, asters, and goldenrods to extend flowering from summer well into fall.

Plant Solar Fancy in full sun with excellent drainage and avoid overly rich soil or heavy fertilization, which can encourage soft growth at the expense of a compact habit. Deadhead through much of summer for repeat flowering, then allow the final seed heads to remain. Repeated in small drifts, its low stature and vivid flowers create a colorful foreground beneath taller native grasses and late-season perennials.
