Common Witchhazel (Hamamelis virginiana)
Witchhazel is a unique native shrub or small tree that blooms in late fall when little else is flowering. Its yellow, ribbon-like flowers provide a critical late nectar source for pollinators. Historically used in traditional medicine and still valued today, witchhazel is an excellent multi-season plant for native gardens, woodland edges, and streambank restoration.
Key Characteristics
- Late fall bloom for pollinators – One of the latest-blooming native shrubs, flowering October–November to support late-season bees.
- Traditional medicinal uses – The bark and twigs were traditionally used as an astringent for skin care, inflammation, and wound healing.
- Multi-season interest – Offers golden fall foliage, crinkled yellow flowers, and attractive seed capsules that persist into winter.
- Excellent for shaded landscapes – Thrives in understory or edge plantings with dappled light or partial shade.
- Stabilizes soil on slopes and streams – Deep roots and dense growth make it great for erosion control.
