Concordia Oak (Quercus × concordia)
Concordia Oak is a rare and naturally occurring hybrid oak, believed to be a cross between Swamp White Oak (Quercus bicolor) and Chestnut Oak (Quercus montana), combining the flood tolerance and fast growth of the former with the dry-site adaptability and strong wood of the latter. As a hybrid of two native Eastern U.S. oaks, Concordia brings broad site adaptability, high wildlife value, and rapid establishment, making it an excellent choice for restoration, reforestation, silvopasture, and native food forest systems.
Key Characteristics
-
High-Value Acorns for Wildlife
Concordia Oak produces medium-sized acorns that mature in fall and provide food for deer, turkeys, squirrels, jays, and woodpeckers. As with its parent species, the acorns are low in tannins compared to red oaks, making them more palatable to wildlife and more quickly consumed on the ground. -
Supports Hundreds of Lepidoptera Species
Like all native white oaks, Concordia is a keystone species for biodiversity, serving as a host plant for over 500 species of moth and butterfly caterpillars, including Luna moths, Polyphemus moths, and Hairstreak butterflies. These caterpillars feed migratory birds and support broader ecosystem health. -
Flood and Drought Tolerant Hybrid
Thanks to its mixed parentage, Concordia Oak tolerates a wide range of soil conditions—from seasonally wet bottomlands to upland ridges. It can thrive in medium-dry to medium-wet soils, making it a flexible option for streambank plantings, field edges, silvopasture, and difficult transition zones. -
Fast-Growing for an Oak
Concordia inherits the vigorous growth rate of Swamp White Oak, making it faster to establish than many upland oak species. It can reach maturity more quickly, speeding up habitat development, shade, and acorn production for regenerative landscapes. -
Ideal for Ecological Restoration and Agroforestry
With its ecological strength, adaptability, and wildlife value, Concordia Oak is ideal for reforestation projects, riparian buffer zones, silvopasture systems, and native food forest overstory layers. Its hybrid vigor ensures resilience in the face of changing site conditions.
