Lavender, Provence (Lavandula x intermedia ‘Provence’)

Provence lavender is a classic French hybrid lavender known for its long stems, soft violet-blue flower spikes, and exceptionally high essential oil content. Widely used in commercial lavender production, it is especially valued for drying, sachets, and aromatic use. Taller and more open than English lavenders, it brings both scale and fragrance to herb gardens, borders, and low-water landscapes.

Key Characteristics

High oil content for fragrance and drying
Provence lavender is one of the best varieties for essential oil production and dried flower use. The long flower spikes are rich in aromatic oils, making them ideal for sachets, bundles, and crafts. Its scent is classic lavender—sweet, slightly camphorous, and long-lasting.

Traditional calming and aromatic herb
Like other lavenders, Provence is used for relaxation, stress relief, and sleep support. The flowers are commonly used in teas, infused oils, and aromatherapy. It is also used externally in salves and oils for skin soothing and general calming effects.

Tall, open growth for larger plantings
This variety grows taller and more loosely than compact English types, often reaching 2–3 feet in height. Its longer stems make it especially suited for cutting gardens and larger landscape plantings, where it adds vertical presence and movement.

Drought-tolerant plant for Mediterranean-style systems
Provence lavender thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, especially sandy or rocky conditions. It is highly drought-tolerant once established and performs well in xeriscapes, pollinator gardens, and permaculture systems focused on low water input.

  • Native range: Mediterranean region (hybrid origin)
  • Plant life cycle: Perennial
  • Sun requirements: Full sun
  • Soil requirements: Dry to medium, well-drained (prefers sandy soils)
  • Mature height: 24–36 inches
  • Bloom time: June – August
  • Bloom color: Light violet-blue
  • USDA Hardiness zones: 5–9

For best results, plant in full sun with excellent drainage and avoid heavy or wet soils. Harvest stems just as flowers begin to open for peak fragrance, and prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage healthy regrowth.
