Plum, Santa Rosa (Prunus salicina 'Santa Rosa')

Santa Rosa is a legendary Japanese plum cultivar prized for its rich flavor, high productivity, and versatility in both backyard and commercial orchards. Developed by famed horticulturist Luther Burbank in the early 1900s, this plum remains a favorite for its large, reddish-purple fruits with amber flesh and complex sweet-tart taste. Santa Rosa is a vigorous grower and early bearer, well-suited for diverse climates and a staple in home orchards, permaculture food forests, and fruit tree guilds.

Key Characteristics

  • Intensely flavorful, multi-purpose fruit
Santa Rosa plums are large and juicy with reddish skin and golden-amber flesh. The taste starts tart near the skin and finishes with a honeyed sweetness—making them excellent for fresh eating, drying, baking, and preserving.
  • Self-fertile but boosts yields with a pollinator
One of the few Japanese plums that can produce fruit without a companion, Santa Rosa is self-fertile but benefits greatly from cross-pollination with other Japanese varieties like Methley or Spring Satin. It’s also an excellent pollinator for other plums.
  • Early bearing and reliable production
Trees begin producing fruit just 2–3 years after planting and continue with consistent yields. Santa Rosa ripens mid-season, extending the harvest window when planted with early or late-season cultivars.
  • Classic choice for orchards and edible landscapes
With its upright form and manageable size, Santa Rosa works well in small orchards, food forests, or as a feature tree in edible landscapes. It thrives when interplanted with nitrogen fixers, insectary plants, and pollinator-friendly understory herbs.
  • Adaptable to a range of climates
Originally bred in California, Santa Rosa performs well across zones 5–9, tolerating a range of soil types and climates. While some disease resistance is present, it may need protection from bacterial spot in humid regions.
