Peredovik sunflowers are a fast-growing, black-oil sunflower variety prized for attracting wildlife, feeding pollinators, and improving soil health. These tall annuals produce large blooms packed with oily seeds that draw in birds-especially doves, quail, and songbirds-while also serving as a sacrificial or decoy crop to reduce deer pressure on nearby plantings.

Their deep roots help loosen soil, and their bold flowers support bees and other beneficial insects. Great for wildlife plots, cover crop mixes, or adding biodiversity to garden edges and food forests.

Sunflowers are powerful tools in bioremediation, the process of using plants to clean up contaminated soils. Their deep roots and fast growth make them effective at phytoextraction, where they draw up heavy metals like lead, arsenic, cadmium, and zinc from the soil into their tissues. This helps reduce soil toxicity in polluted urban lots, former industrial sites, and areas impacted by mining or chemical use. Sunflowers are especially valued in regenerative land restoration projects for their ability to stabilize soil, support pollinators, and improve the land's long-term ecological function-all while helping remove harmful substances naturally.

Best use: Wildlife habitat, pollinator support, decoy crop
Sow: Late spring after danger of frost
Height: 4-6 ft
Growth window: 70-100 days to maturity
Seeding rate: ~1 lb per 500-1000 sq ft

We had high hopes for these sunflowers. We keep broadcasting them without luck. It's possible to soil has too much clay. But after many attempts to broadcast we still don't have any results. Don't see how the birds could get all of them! Hard to work the soil in on this slope. We also broadcast buckwheat without germination issues. We decided to put in Orange Butterfly Weed and St. John's Wort on this slope. We bought a huge bag of these sunflowers so somewhat disappointed.

Grace, thank you for sharing your experience. We're sorry to hear these didn't establish as you had hoped.

From what you've described, it sounds like there may be a site-specific challenge rather than an issue with the seed itself. Clay soils, steep slopes, inconsistent seed-to-soil contact, and wildlife can all significantly affect germination when broadcasting seed. While it may seem surprising, birds and other wildlife can consume a remarkable amount of seed before it has a chance to sprout, especially when seed is left on or near the soil surface.

We've had good germination with this variety ourselves, and fortunately haven't seen any reports of issues from other customers. Because of that, we'd have loved the opportunity to help troubleshoot with you before you gave up on the planting. Sometimes a few adjustments to site preparation or sowing technique can make all the difference.

We truly appreciate your feedback and would be happy to help if you decide to give these another try or have questions about establishing plants in challenging locations. Our goal is always to help our customers succeed.
