Chinese Chestnut (Castanea mollissima)
Chinese chestnut produces sweet, starchy nuts beneath a spreading canopy. These seed-grown trees suit a home nut grove or spacious food forest; nut size and productivity will vary.
Key Characteristics
A different kind of nut
Chestnuts are useful roasted, boiled, or dried for flour. Spiny burs make a dedicated harvest area preferable to a heavily used lawn.
Build pollination into the planting
Plant at least two separate Chinese chestnut seedlings within pollen range; three or more provide additional diversity. Choosing two sizes is optional—different seedlings, not different grades, supply genetic diversity.
Resistance and site selection
Chinese chestnut has substantially better chestnut-blight resistance than American chestnut, without being immune to every disease. Excellent drainage and regular collection of fallen nuts support tree health and help manage harvest pests.

Planting and Ongoing Care
Keep bare roots moist until planting, spread roots naturally, and water thoroughly. Maintain a mulched area clear of grass, with mulch pulled away from stems. Base feeding on a soil test; our Tree Planting Kit fertilizer blend is optional and should be used according to its label, away from direct contact with bare roots.
Check harvested nuts for chestnut weevil damage. For a different growth background, compare our American-Asian hybrid chestnut; its disease resistance and mature form are more variable.
For ideas on combining planting layers, explore our fruit-tree guild guide. Give the nut tree's mature canopy and roots priority when arranging companions.
