Apple, Enterprise (Malus domestica 'Enterprise')
Enterprise is a modern disease-resistant apple developed by Purdue, Rutgers, and the University of Illinois as part of the PRI apple breeding program. With firm, spicy-sweet fruit, excellent storage life, and strong resistance to common apple diseases, Enterprise is an outstanding choice for no-spray or organic orchards. Its glossy red apples ripen in late October and store exceptionally well—often improving in flavor after a few weeks. Hardy and productive, Enterprise fits beautifully into regenerative orchard systems and food forests, offering resilience, reliability, and rich late-season fruit.
Key Characteristics
-
Excellent disease resistance for low-input systems
Enterprise is highly resistant to apple scab and fire blight and moderately resistant to cedar apple rust and powdery mildew. It’s ideal for organic orchards, permaculture food forests, or any grower seeking high-quality fruit with minimal spraying. -
Spicy-sweet, crisp fruit with long shelf life
The apples are medium to large with a deep, glossy red skin. Flesh is creamy, firm, and crisp with a spicy, rich flavor—excellent for fresh eating, baking, cider, and winter storage. Flavor deepens after a few weeks in storage. -
Late harvest extends apple season
Ripening in late October, Enterprise is one of the last apples to mature, allowing growers to extend the harvest window well into fall. It stores for 4–6 months under proper conditions, keeping its texture and flavor. -
Cold-hardy and widely adaptable
Hardy to Zone 4, Enterprise performs well in both northern and temperate climates. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil, but tolerates a range of conditions and is a consistent, productive tree once established. -
Fits well into fruit tree guilds and permaculture orchards
With its disease resistance, reliable yields, and late-season productivity, Enterprise integrates well into regenerative orchard designs. It provides bloom overlap for mid- to late-season apples and benefits from companion plants that attract pollinators and support tree health.
