Fuji Apple (Malus domestica ‘Fuji’)

Fuji is an apple for people who prefer sweetness with a firm, juicy crunch. Its red-blushed fruit has dense flesh and relatively mild acidity, making it especially useful for fresh eating, lunchboxes, juice, and dried apple slices.

Key Characteristics

Sweetness and crunch are its defining features

Fuji’s dense flesh combines plenty of juice with a sweet, honeyed flavor. Its milder acidity makes it a different eating experience from a sharply tart apple such as Granny Smith.

A late crop with good keeping quality

Fuji needs a growing season long enough for the fruit to develop flavor, so it is less suitable where autumn cold arrives before late apples mature. Sound fruit keeps well for several months under good refrigerated storage, extending its fresh-eating use beyond harvest.

A useful apple for juice, drying, and blended recipes

Its sweetness is useful in juice and dried apple rings, and it also works in baked dishes. For a brighter-tasting pie or cider blend, combine it with a more acidic apple rather than relying on sweetness alone.

Thin the crop and plan preventive care

Fuji benefits from early fruit thinning to improve size and help reduce uneven cropping between years. It is not a broad disease-resistance selection: monitor for fire blight and scab, especially in humid conditions, and avoid excess nitrogen that encourages tender, vulnerable growth.

Pollination Partners

Plant at least one different, compatible apple variety for cross-pollination. Options in our 2027 selection include Freedom, Gala, Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Liberty. Cross-pollination depends on overlapping bloom, not matching harvest months; a second Fuji on another rootstock is still the same variety.

For additional orchard pollen diversity and dark pink spring flowers, consider Prairie Fire crabapple. Its bloom needs to overlap with the apples it supports.

Rootstock and Mature Size

Mature height depends on rootstock, soil, and pruning: allow roughly 10–15 feet for G.935, 12–20 feet for the M.106/M.111 option, and 20–30 feet for standard rootstock. G.935 is the most compact option offered here and benefits from permanent support. The M.106/M.111 option may be either rootstock, so allow for the larger end of that range and prioritize excellent drainage, especially with M.106.

General Apple Orchard Guidance

Sun, soil, and a good start

Choose a sunny site with well-drained soil and room for the tree’s rootstock; partial shade generally means fewer flowers and fruit. Keep the graft union above soil level, water consistently while roots establish, and maintain a mulched, grass-free area with mulch pulled back from the trunk.

Fertility and useful companions

Base lime and fertilizer applications on a soil test rather than feeding heavily by default; too much nitrogen encourages leafy growth at the expense of balanced fruiting. Our Tree Planting Kit fertilizer blend is an optional planting supplement; keep concentrated fertilizer away from bare roots. Interested in permaculture and stacking functions around your fruit trees? Explore our fruit-tree guild guide for ideas on combining plants for flowers, ground cover, and mulch while giving your tree room to grow.

Organic approaches to orchard pests and diseases

Prune for light and airflow, remove mummified and fallen fruit, and thin crowded fruit clusters. These habits reduce places where diseases and pests persist; codling moth, apple maggot, and plum curculio are common fruit pests to monitor. Bagging clean, young apples after thinning can reduce insect damage in small orchards; identify the pest before choosing any additional treatment, and avoid insecticide applications during bloom to protect bees.

Give Fuji enough sun, time to ripen, and room between fruit clusters to develop the sweetness and crunch it is known for.
