American Beech (Fagus grandifolia)
American beech develops smooth gray bark, a broad shade canopy, and golden-bronze fall foliage. Plant it for a long-lived woodland presence rather than a fast nut harvest.
Key Characteristics
An autumn mast tree
Beechnuts feed wild turkeys, blue jays, nuthatches, and black bears. Nut production varies, and young trees take time to mature.
An unexpected butterfly relationship
Harvester butterfly caterpillars eat woolly aphids found on beech. Before treating an aphid colony, look for this unusual predator and assess whether the tree is actually being harmed.
Protect the future root zone
Beech prefers moist, freely draining soil and tolerates shade. Keep machinery, soil fill, and repeated foot traffic away from its shallow roots as the tree grows.

Planting and Ongoing Care
Keep bare roots moist until planting, spread roots naturally, and water thoroughly. Maintain a mulched area clear of grass, with mulch pulled away from stems. Base feeding on a soil test; our Tree Planting Kit fertilizer blend is optional and should be used according to its label, away from direct contact with bare roots.
Water new trees through dry spells and avoid compacted or waterlogged sites. Monitor local guidance on beech leaf disease and beech bark disease; this stock is not sold as disease-resistant.
For ideas on combining planting layers, explore our fruit-tree guild guide. Give the nut tree's mature canopy and roots priority when arranging companions.
