Apple, Liberty (Malus domestica 'Liberty')
Liberty is a modern disease-resistant apple bred specifically for organic and low-input orchards. Released by the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in 1978, Liberty is a cross between 'Macoun' and a seedling with scab-resistance genes from Malus floribunda. The result is a crisp, juicy apple with a red-blushed skin, tart-sweet flavor, and excellent resistance to apple scab, fire blight, and mildew. Liberty ripens mid-season and is one of the most reliable apples for homesteaders, food forests, and permaculture orchards looking for a no-spray or minimal-spray option that doesn't sacrifice flavor or productivity.
Key Characteristics
-
Excellent disease resistance for low-spray orchards
Liberty is resistant to apple scab, fire blight, cedar apple rust, and powdery mildew, making it one of the best apples for organic and regenerative growing systems. It performs well even in humid climates where fungal diseases are common. -
Crisp, tart-sweet flavor for fresh use and baking
Liberty’s flavor is bright and tangy when first picked, mellowing in storage to a balanced, sweet-tart profile. It has crisp, juicy flesh that holds up well in pies and tarts while also making a refreshing fresh-eating apple. -
Reliable mid-season harvest and strong annual bearer
Ripening in mid to late September, Liberty provides a dependable harvest before most late-season apples. It bears regularly and abundantly, even in less-than-ideal conditions, and begins producing fruit within a few years of planting. -
Attractive fruit and compact growth habit
Liberty apples are medium-sized with a deep red blush over yellow skin. The tree has a naturally compact, upright growth habit, making it well suited to small orchards, edible landscapes, and backyard food forests. -
Pollinator-friendly and a good orchard companion
Liberty produces abundant mid-season blooms that support native pollinators and act as a good pollen source for other mid-blooming apple varieties. Its disease resistance and productivity make it a great foundational tree in mixed-variety orchard systems.
