Apple Scion Wood – Liberty (Malus domestica)
Liberty is a modern disease-resistant apple developed by the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station and released in 1978. Bred from a cross involving Macoun and Purdue breeding lines, it was created to combine excellent fresh-eating quality with strong resistance to common apple diseases. The medium-sized fruit has deep red skin and crisp, juicy flesh with a bright sweet-tart flavor that makes it a favorite among home orchardists and organic growers.
Key Characteristics
Highly disease-resistant orchard apple
Liberty was specifically bred for resistance to apple scab and shows good resistance to cedar apple rust and powdery mildew. This makes it one of the most reliable apples for growers who want to reduce spraying or maintain organic orchards.
Crisp, juicy dessert apple
The flesh is firm, juicy, and aromatic with a balanced sweet-tart flavor. Many growers compare the flavor to McIntosh-style apples but with better firmness and storage qualities.
Reliable mid-season harvest
Liberty typically ripens in mid to late September. The fruit colors well and is produced in consistent crops, making it a dependable variety for both home orchards and small-scale growers.
Excellent apple for fresh eating and cooking
The crisp flesh is excellent for fresh eating but also works well in pies, sauces, and cider. Its balanced acidity and sweetness make it a versatile kitchen apple.

Important: What You Are Buying (Scion Wood)
This product is apple scion wood, which is a dormant cutting taken from a mature tree during winter. It is essentially a stick with no roots and will not grow on its own. In order to grow a tree, the scion must be grafted onto a compatible apple rootstock.
Grafting allows growers to combine the fruiting variety with a root system that controls tree size, vigor, and adaptability. If you are planning to graft this season, check out our selection of apple rootstocks and build your own apple tree.
