Apple Scion Wood – Newtown Pippin (Malus domestica)
Newtown Pippin is one of the most celebrated American heirloom apples, originating in the early 1700s in Newtown, New York (now Elmhurst, Queens). It was the first American apple widely exported to Europe and was highly regarded in England for its exceptional flavor. The fruit is typically green to yellow with firm, crisp flesh and a rich sweet-tart taste that develops greater complexity after storage.
Key Characteristics
Historic American export apple
Newtown Pippin was one of the first American apples grown commercially and exported abroad. By the 18th century it had become highly prized in England, where it was considered one of the finest apples imported from the colonies.
Complex sweet-tart flavor
The firm flesh is crisp and juicy with a balanced flavor that combines sweetness with refreshing acidity. After a period of storage, the flavor deepens and becomes more aromatic, which is why the apple has long been valued by apple enthusiasts.
Excellent storage apple
Newtown Pippin is a late-season variety that typically ripens in October. When stored properly, the apples keep well for several months, with flavor often improving during storage as sugars develop.
Versatile culinary apple
The firm texture and balanced flavor make this apple useful for fresh eating as well as cooking. It performs well in pies, baking, cider, and traditional preserves.

Important: What You Are Buying (Scion Wood)
This product is apple scion wood, which is a dormant cutting taken from a mature tree during winter. It is essentially a stick with no roots and will not grow on its own. In order to grow a tree, the scion must be grafted onto a compatible apple rootstock.
Grafting allows growers to combine the fruiting variety with a root system that controls tree size, vigor, and adaptability. If you are planning to graft this season, check out our selection of apple rootstocks and build your own apple tree.
