Drummond's Aster (Symphyotrichum drummondii)

Drummond's Aster is a native woodland-edge perennial that brings clouds of pale lavender-blue flowers into the garden just as summer gives way to fall. Naturally adapted to open woods, savannas, thickets, and woodland margins of the central United States, it is especially useful for bringing late-season flowers into partial shade—a niche where pollinator resources can become scarce. Its branching flower sprays pair beautifully with goldenrods and native grasses, while its flowers and foliage participate in a much larger food web of bees, butterflies, moths, and seed-eating birds.

Key Characteristics

Late-season flowers for woodland pollinators
Numerous small flower heads open from late summer into autumn, each combining lavender-blue rays with a yellow center. They are visited by bumble bees, sweat bees, mining bees, small carpenter bees, syrphid flies, skippers, and butterflies. Planting Drummond's Aster with goldenrods creates an especially effective fall combination, supplying diverse pollen and nectar resources during the final major feeding period before winter.

Native Symphyotrichum species serve as larval hosts for several butterflies and moths, including the Pearl Crescent (Phyciodes tharos) and Silvery Checkerspot (Chlosyne nycteis). This means the plant contributes food before its flowers ever open. Leaving portions of the planting undisturbed through winter also preserves stems, leaf litter, and sheltered spaces used by overwintering insects.

Unlike prairie asters demanding uninterrupted sun, Drummond's Aster is particularly valuable along woodland edges and beneath high, open tree canopies. It can be layered with native sedges, Wild Geranium, Columbine, woodland grasses, goldenrods, and shade-tolerant violets to create a flowering herbaceous layer. In larger regenerative landscapes, use it along forest margins and transitional zones between meadow and woodland.

Naturalistic drifts create the strongest effect
Its branching stems produce many relatively small flowers rather than a few oversized blooms, giving established plants an airy, meadow-like character. Repeating plants in loose drifts creates a much stronger visual and ecological effect than isolated specimens. Where stems become taller than desired, cutting them back by roughly one-third in late spring can encourage bushier, more compact growth.
