Bald Cypress

Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum)

Bald Cypress is a majestic, deciduous conifer native to the southeastern United States, known for its adaptability to wet soils and distinctive, elegant appearance. This long-lived tree can grow to 50-70 feet tall, with feathery, soft green foliage that turns a beautiful coppery-bronze in the fall before dropping, giving it a unique “bald” appearance in winter. Ideal for rain gardens, streambanks, and low-lying areas, Bald Cypress thrives in wet conditions but also tolerates drier soils once established. Hardy and resilient in USDA Zones 4-9, it's a favorite for both natural landscapes and urban environments due to its resistance to flooding, drought, and strong winds.

Key Characteristics

• Feathery Foliage and Seasonal Color
The soft, needle-like leaves of Bald Cypress emerge a fresh green in spring, creating a feathery, airy texture. In fall, they turn a rich copper-bronze, adding warm color to the landscape before dropping for winter.

• Adaptable to Wet and Dry Soils
Naturally found in swamps and floodplains, Bald Cypress thrives in standing water but also adapts well to drier soils. It's an excellent choice for rain gardens, streambanks, and other water-prone areas.

• Knee-Like Root Structures
When grown in wet conditions, Bald Cypress develops unique root structures known as “knees” that rise above the waterline. These add visual interest to wetland plantings and support soil stability.

• Deciduous Conifer with Winter Interest
Unlike most conifers, Bald Cypress sheds its foliage each fall, creating a “bald” appearance. Its stark, upright form provides structural beauty to the winter landscape, offering year-round interest.

• Low-Maintenance and Disease-Resistant
Bald Cypress is highly resilient, with natural resistance to pests and diseases. Its durability and minimal care requirements make it a great choice for both naturalized and urban settings.
