Bee Balm, Basil (Monarda citriodora)
Basil bee balm, also known as lemon bee balm, is an aromatic annual native to the central and southern United States. It produces stacked whorls of lavender to pinkish-purple flowers and fragrant foliage with a citrusy, oregano-like scent. Fast-growing and highly attractive to pollinators, it plays a valuable role in herbal gardens, meadow plantings, and low-input systems.
Key Characteristics
Citrus-aromatic foliage with culinary and herbal uses
The leaves have a bright, lemony aroma with subtle herbal undertones. Traditionally, they have been used fresh or dried in teas and culinary applications, offering mild digestive support and a refreshing flavor profile.
Stacked blooms for strong pollinator attraction
Basil bee balm produces tiered flower clusters that are especially attractive to bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Its long bloom period provides a steady nectar source during summer, supporting a wide range of beneficial insects.
Fast-growing annual for quick establishment
This species establishes rapidly from seed and begins flowering within a short time. It’s ideal for filling seasonal gaps in pollinator plantings or adding diversity to meadow and herb garden systems.
Adaptable plant for dry, low-input landscapes
Basil bee balm thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, tolerating dry conditions once established. It performs well in meadows, pollinator gardens, and permaculture systems where resilience and minimal inputs are desired.
