Yellow Birch (Betula alleghaniensis)
A cool-woodland canopy tree with yellow-bronze peeling bark. It suits moist forest restoration and spacious landscapes where roots can stay cool.
Key Characteristics
A host for woodland butterflies
Mourning cloak and dreamy duskywing larvae feed on birch foliage. Retain a leafy understory and some fallen leaves rather than managing the entire root area as lawn.
Old trees add a second habitat layer
Cavities in aging yellow birches can shelter northern flying squirrels and northern saw-whet owls. Those features develop over time and are a reason to plan for a lasting tree.
Choose a cool site
Protect roots from hot, dry, compacted ground. Compare River Birch for a moisture-loving lowland birch with a different climate fit.

Planting and Ongoing Care
Keep bare roots moist until planting and spread roots without bending them into a tight hole. Water during establishment, mulch clear of the trunk, and protect young trees from browsing and mowing damage. Base feeding on a soil test; our Tree Planting Kit fertilizer blend can be used according to its label when needed.
Avoid heat and drought stress. Keep the root zone mulched and inspect declining branches for borers or disease. Avoid insecticides on open flowers. These are seedlings rather than selected clones, so growth, flowering, and fruiting vary.
