Cherry (Sweet), Black Tartarian

Black Tartarian is an heirloom cherry variety beloved for its early-season, sweet, dark purple fruit and reliable productivity. Known for its juicy, tender flesh and complex, mildly sweet flavor, Black Tartarian cherries are perfect for fresh eating and pair beautifully with other cherry varieties in the orchard. Ripening in early summer, typically in late June, this cherry tree produces clusters of dark fruit against dense green foliage and reaches a mature height of 15-20 feet. Black Tartarian is an excellent pollinator partner for other cherry trees, such as Bing and Rainier, boosting orchard yields and enhancing fruit diversity.

Key Characteristics

Early-Ripening Sweet Cherry
Black Tartarian cherries are among the first to ripen, producing fruit as early as late June. Their mildly sweet flavor and juicy flesh make them ideal for fresh eating and adding depth to mixed cherry dishes.

Dark, Juicy Fruit with Tender Flesh
These cherries are medium-sized with a dark purple color, juicy texture, and delicate skin. Their unique flavor is sweet with a hint of tartness, making them an heirloom favorite.

Beautiful Spring Blooms
Black Tartarian trees are covered in clusters of white flowers in early spring, creating a lovely display that attracts pollinators and contributes to the tree's high productivity.

Exceptional Pollinator Partner
As a self-sterile variety, Black Tartarian requires a pollination partner to set fruit but is also one of the best pollinators for other cherry varieties, like Bing and Rainier, enhancing fruit yields across the orchard.

Cold-Hardy and Low-Maintenance
Thriving in USDA Zones 5-8, Black Tartarian is cold-hardy and tolerant of moderate winters, making it a reliable, low-maintenance choice for gardeners seeking an easy-care cherry tree.
