Allegheny Chinkapin (Castanea pumila)
Allegheny chinkapin is a native chestnut relative that grows as a spreading shrub or small tree. Its small, sweet nuts suit wildlife edges and informal edible plantings.
Key Characteristics
One sweet nut in each bur
The prickly burs generally hold a single nut. Harvesting is hands-on, and birds and mammals compete for the crop.
A smaller layer in the food forest
Its thicket-forming habit fits below larger nut trees or along a sunny edge. Compare Chinese chestnut if you have room for a substantially larger nut tree.
Drainage and diversity
Choose acidic to neutral soil with good drainage and plant multiple unrelated seedlings for dependable pollination opportunities. Some chestnut-blight resistance does not eliminate the possibility of infection.

Planting and Ongoing Care
Keep bare roots moist until planting, spread roots naturally, and water thoroughly. Maintain a mulched area clear of grass, with mulch pulled away from stems. Base feeding on a soil test; our Tree Planting Kit fertilizer blend is optional and should be used according to its label, away from direct contact with bare roots.
Inspect stems for cankers and leave room to manage suckers. Avoid wet, compacted planting sites.
For ideas on combining planting layers, explore our fruit-tree guild guide. Give the nut tree's mature canopy and roots priority when arranging companions.
