Ginkgo

Ginkgo, also known as Maidenhair Tree, is an ancient, deciduous tree known for its unique fan-shaped leaves, brilliant yellow fall color, and resilience to urban environments. As one of the oldest tree species on earth, Ginkgo has a unique botanical and cultural heritage, along with exceptional hardiness and low maintenance needs. This tree is ideal for urban landscapes, parks, and large gardens, where it can provide shade, seasonal beauty, and long-lasting durability. Male cultivars are typically preferred for landscaping due to the absence of the fruit that female trees produce.

Key Characteristics

Distinctive Fan-Shaped Leaves and Fall Color: Ginkgo's iconic, fan-shaped leaves create a striking appearance in spring and summer. In autumn, its foliage turns a brilliant yellow, creating a vibrant display that brightens the landscape before dropping almost all at once, making cleanup easy.

Resilient and Adaptable: Ginkgo is incredibly tolerant of pollution, heat, and drought, making it an excellent choice for city and suburban plantings. It thrives in a variety of soils, including sandy and loamy types, as long as they are well-drained.

Long-Lived and Disease-Resistant: Known for its longevity and hardiness, Ginkgo resists common pests and diseases and can live for centuries, providing shade and beauty for generations. Its strong resistance to adverse conditions makes it one of the most durable urban trees.

Historical and Medicinal Significance: Ginkgo has been used in traditional medicine for centuries, valued for its leaves' antioxidant properties. This tree's ancient heritage and use in herbal supplements make it an appealing choice for educational and medicinal gardens.

Male and Female Trees: Ginkgo trees are dioecious, with separate male and female plants. Male trees are commonly used in landscapes to avoid the fruit, which has a strong odor when ripe, making male cultivars preferable for most settings.
