Green and Gold (Chrysogonum virginianum)

Green and Gold is a low-growing native perennial that combines cheerful golden flowers with a spreading carpet of green foliage. Native to eastern North American woodlands, it occupies an especially useful garden niche: the partly shaded ground layer beneath trees and shrubs where turf and sun-loving flowers often struggle. Its spring bloom supplies small native pollinators with floral resources, while its creeping habit makes it an excellent living groundcover for woodland gardens, native borders, shaded pathways, and the understory of layered food forests.

Key Characteristics

Golden flowers for the woodland floor
Bright yellow, five-rayed flowers begin appearing in spring, standing just above the foliage like tiny golden stars. Flowering can continue for weeks, and established plants may produce scattered repeat blooms later in the growing season when moisture and temperatures are favorable. The blooms are visited by small native bees, flies, and other beneficial insects.

A living groundcover beneath trees and shrubs
Green and Gold spreads gradually by rhizomes and stolon-like stems, creating colonies without developing the towering growth of many woodland perennials. Use it beneath deciduous trees, along shaded garden paths, at woodland edges, or beneath larger native shrubs. It is particularly effective when planted in drifts, where individual plants knit together into a continuous herbaceous layer.

An alternative to mulch in layered native plantings
Instead of maintaining bare mulch beneath shrubs and small trees, Green and Gold can occupy that ecological space with living foliage and flowers. Combine it with woodland phlox, sedges, ferns, violets, Jacob's Ladder, and spring ephemerals to create multiple layers at ground level. This approach reduces open niches where weeds can establish while creating a more structurally diverse garden.

Best where soil stays moderately moist but drains well
Green and Gold appreciates humus-rich woodland soil but does not require constantly wet conditions. Partial shade is generally ideal, especially in warmer climates; too much deep shade can reduce flowering, while intense afternoon sun can stress plants where soils become dry. Once established, colonies require relatively little maintenance beyond controlling their boundaries if necessary.
