Joe Pye Weed, ‘Mystery’ (Eutrochium hybrid ‘Mystery’)
‘Mystery’ Joe Pye Weed is a compact, floriferous selection that delivers all the pollinator power of traditional Joe Pye Weed in a more garden-friendly size. Topped with large mauve-pink flower clusters from midsummer into fall, this cultivar serves as a major nectar resource during one of the busiest periods of pollinator activity. Its strong stems, long bloom period, and adaptability make it an outstanding choice for pollinator gardens, rain gardens, meadows, and naturalistic landscapes.
Key Characteristics
Butterfly magnet during peak summer bloom
The large flower clusters attract an impressive diversity of pollinators, including Monarchs, Eastern Tiger Swallowtails, Black Swallowtails, fritillaries, skippers, and numerous native bee species. Few native perennials can match its ability to draw pollinator activity from midsummer into early fall.
Compact habit with full-sized ecological benefits
Unlike some native Joe Pye Weed species that can exceed 6 feet in height, ‘Mystery’ maintains a more manageable stature while producing abundant blooms. This makes it easier to incorporate into residential landscapes, pollinator borders, and smaller meadow plantings.
Important late-season nectar source
Flowering during July through September, ‘Mystery’ helps sustain pollinator populations during a critical period before fall asters and goldenrods reach peak bloom. It serves as an important succession plant in landscapes designed for season-long nectar availability.
Excellent for rain gardens and moisture-retentive soils
Joe Pye Weed naturally thrives in moist meadows and stream corridors. ‘Mystery’ performs beautifully in rain gardens, bioswales, pollinator meadows, and areas with periodic moisture, while also adapting to average garden soils once established.
