Kentucky Coffeetree (Gymnocladus dioicus)
Kentucky coffeetree is a large native shade tree with an open crown, very large compound leaves, and a bold winter branch pattern. Its leaves emerge late and fall relatively early, giving the ground beneath a longer season of light than many dense-canopied trees.
Host Foliage and Late-Spring Flowers
The leaves support bicolored honey locust moth and bisected honey locust moth larvae. Creamy-green flower clusters appear near the branch tips in late spring to early summer. Leave room for both the canopy and a connected planting below it.
Pods Depend on the Tree’s Sex
Male and female flowers usually occur on separate trees. Female trees can carry large leathery pods into winter; a male selection is used when avoiding pods matters. This unnamed listing does not identify sex, so a pod-free tree is not guaranteed.
Cultural History and Practical Siting
The common name reflects historical use of roasted seeds as a coffee substitute, but seeds and pod pulp are poisonous and should not be treated as a home food crop. Its wood has also been used for cabinetry. Give this tree a spacious sunny site, and consider pod litter when choosing a position near paths or grazing areas.
