Sweetbay Magnolia (Magnolia virginiana)
Sweetbay magnolia brings lemon-scented white flowers and silver-backed leaves to moist native plantings. It may be deciduous or partly evergreen depending on climate, rather than keeping the same winter foliage everywhere.
A Flower with a Beetle Partnership
Beetles are important visitors and pollinators of magnolia flowers. The leaves also support caterpillars, including eastern tiger swallowtail and sweetbay silkmoth. Later, bright red-coated seeds offer food for birds and small mammals.
A Small Tree for Moist Ground
Use sweetbay at a rain-garden edge, beside a pond, or in a moist woodland opening with acidic soil. It tolerates wetter ground than many other magnolias. Full sun to part shade works well; give the eventual crown space rather than planning only around the pot-sized plant.
Plan for Regional Differences
A shrub-like, multi-stemmed form is common, while warmer southern sites can produce a much larger tree. Winter leaf retention and cold damage also depend on the selection and site. Keep roots moist through establishment and use a sheltered position near the cold end of its range.
