Nelson Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum ‘Nelson’)

Nelson is a northern highbush blueberry with large, firm fruit that ripens toward the middle to later part of the blueberry season. The berries work fresh, frozen, in baking, or in preserves; local weather shifts the picking dates.

Pollination and a Longer Harvest

Northern highbush blueberries can bear alone, but a different compatible cultivar with overlapping flowers can improve fruit set and berry size. A second Nelson is the same cultivar, not a genetically different partner. Consider Bluecrop or Jersey, checking flower overlap in your planting. Harvest season and flowering season are different; late berries do not necessarily mean late flowers.

Specialist Bees and Bird Fruit

Bumblebees visit the bell-shaped flowers, while the blueberry genus also supports specialist bees such as the southeastern blueberry bee (Habropoda laboriosa). Birds share the ripe berries. Keep the flowering area free of insecticides, and decide whether a portion of the crop can be left for wildlife.

An Acid-Soil Shrub Layer

Use a soil test before planting: blueberries need acidic, moist, well-drained soil and often struggle in a generic mixed-fruit bed with higher pH. Mulch to protect their shallow roots and water through establishment and fruit filling. This makes a useful berry layer in a food forest where its particular soil needs can be met.
