Reliance Peach (Prunus persica)

Reliance is a cold-hardy yellow freestone peach developed for colder growing regions. Its value lies in bringing a peach crop to suitable northern sites, along with fruit for fresh use and preserving.

Key Characteristics

A cold-climate breeding goal

Reliance was selected for flower-bud hardiness and winter survival. A late freeze can still damage open flowers, so an elevated site with good air drainage remains useful.

Yellow freestone fruit

The fruit has a red blush over yellow skin and a familiar sweet peach flavor. Enjoy ripe fruit fresh or use it for sauce, baking, and freezer batches.

Thin for fruit size and branch strength

Heavy sets need thinning just as they do on other peaches. Keep the tree open to light and maintain ordinary brown-rot and insect care through the season.

Pollination Partners

Self-fertile; a second tree is not required. Cross-pollination depends on overlapping bloom, not matching harvest months.

Rootstock and Mature Size

Plan for approximately 15–20 feet at maturity, depending on site and pruning. The offered variant identifies the rootstock; keep the graft union above soil level and remove rootstock suckers.

Choose well-drained soil and enough room for the mature tree. Water consistently while roots establish, mulch with space around the trunk, and keep vigorous grass and other competitors away from the young root zone.

Peaches and nectarines fruit on the previous season’s growth, so annual pruning and early thinning help maintain light, fruit size, and branch strength. Remove mummified fruit and monitor for brown rot, leaf curl, and plum curculio. Use sanitation, fruit bags where practical, and locally appropriate organic care; avoid insecticides during bloom.
