Hachiya Persimmon (Diospyros kaki ‘Hachiya’)
Hachiya is the large, acorn-shaped Asian persimmon grown for very sweet, soft pulp. It is astringent while firm, so patience at ripening is essential to enjoying the fruit.
Key Characteristics
Wait for a fully soft fruit
Hachiya should feel almost jelly-soft before fresh eating. Orange color alone does not mean the tannins have cleared.
A useful baking and drying persimmon
The ripe pulp is good for pudding, quick breads, smoothies, and desserts. Firm mature fruit is also used in traditional drying methods that remove astringency over time.
Warmth helps finish the crop
Hachiya is a later persimmon and benefits from a growing season that lets fruit mature fully. It can set seedless fruit without another tree, simplifying a small planting.
Pollination Partners
Self-fruitful; a second tree or male pollen source is not required. It is grown chiefly for female flowers and seedless fruit, not as a pollinizer for other cultivars. Cross-pollination depends on overlapping bloom, not matching harvest months.
Rootstock and Mature Size
Plan for approximately 20–30 feet at maturity, depending on site and pruning. The offered variant identifies the rootstock; keep the graft union above soil level and remove rootstock suckers.

General Persimmon Orchard Guidance
A good start
Choose well-drained soil and enough room for the mature tree. Water consistently while roots establish, mulch with space around the trunk, and keep vigorous grass and other competitors away from the young root zone.
Fertility and fruit-tree guilds
Use a soil test to guide lime and fertilizer rather than feeding heavily by default. Our Tree Planting Kit fertilizer blend is an optional planting supplement; keep concentrated fertilizer away from bare roots and avoid excess nitrogen.

Practical pest and disease care
Water young trees consistently and avoid overfeeding; vigorous growth or heavy crops can encourage fruit drop. Prune lightly for structure, remove damaged fruit, and monitor for scale, leaf spots, and browsing. Protect young trunks and support heavily loaded branches as needed.
