Raspberry, 'Caroline' (Red) - Rubus idaeus 'Caroline'
'Caroline' is a vigorous, everbearing red raspberry known for producing large, sweet, and aromatic berries on tall, robust canes from midsummer through fall. This variety is highly regarded for both its flavor and yield, offering a long harvest season and excellent disease resistance-especially to root rot. Bred at the University of Maryland, 'Caroline' is a favorite among homesteaders and market growers alike for fresh eating, preserves, baking, and freezing.
As a primocane-bearing variety, 'Caroline' fruits on new canes in late summer to frost, and can also offer a lighter summer crop on second-year canes if allowed. Its adaptability, productivity, and quality fruit make it an outstanding choice for food forests, edible hedgerows, and permaculture systems.
Key Characteristics
Large, Flavorful Red Berries
Produces juicy, aromatic fruits that are firm yet tender, with a rich raspberry flavor. Excellent for fresh eating, jam, freezing, and baking. Berries are larger and tastier than many other everbearing types.
Everbearing for Extended Harvest
As a primocane type, 'Caroline' bears a heavy late-summer to fall crop on first-year canes and a smaller early-summer crop on second-year canes. This makes it a great choice for season extension and consistent yield.
Highly Productive and Disease Resistant
Known for its strong resistance to root rot (Phytophthora), a common issue in raspberry cultivation. Performs well in humid or damp climates where other varieties might struggle.
Ideal for Food Forests, Edible Hedges, and Permaculture
Its tall growth (up to 5-6 feet) and suckering habit make it suitable for food forests, edible thickets, or along sunny borders. It can be pruned for single-row production or allowed to form a productive raspberry patch.
Supports Pollinators and Wildlife
The small white spring flowers attract bees and beneficial insects. The fruit is also loved by birds and small mammals-netting may be needed if you want to keep the harvest for yourself!
