Merlot Redbud (Cercis 'Merlot')

Merlot is a selected cross of Forest Pansy and Texas White redbud, developed for a semi-upright habit and glossy, dark foliage. Magenta-pink flowers appear on the bare branches before the rounded leaves open.

Glossy Leaves and Heat Adaptation

Its Texas redbud ancestry contributes thicker leaves and better heat and drought tolerance than many eastern redbud selections. It still needs establishment water and drainage. Purple leaf color can soften or become greener in summer; site and weather influence the effect.

Flowers within a Mixed Habitat Planting

Bees and butterflies visit the spring flowers. Use it as one flowering layer among native shrubs and trees with different bloom times, rather than relying on a single ornamental clone for every wildlife need. Dry seed pods may follow; a named fruiting partner is not needed for its ornamental role.

A Small Tree with a Broad Canopy

It can develop multiple trunks unless selectively trained while young. Leave space for its width and protect the thin bark from equipment. Well-drained soil is more important than claims that it needs almost no care; cankers and dieback are still possible under stress.

Planting and Ongoing Care

Choose its permanent site while the tree is young. Water the root ball before planting, address circling roots, and mulch clear of the trunk. Water during dry spells and protect the thin bark from mowers and trimmers. Inspect dying branches for cankers; prune selectively after flowering rather than repeatedly shearing the canopy.
