Zinnia, Thumbelina (Zinnia elegans ‘Thumbelina’)
Thumbelina is a charming dwarf zinnia that delivers an abundance of brightly colored blooms on compact, easy-to-grow plants. One of the smallest zinnia varieties available, it produces fully double flowers in a cheerful mix of red, pink, orange, yellow, purple, and white shades. Its tidy growth habit, long bloom season, and strong pollinator appeal make it ideal for containers, borders, children's gardens, and small-space plantings.
Key Characteristics
True dwarf zinnia for small gardens and containers
Thumbelina grows just a few inches tall while producing surprisingly large blooms relative to its size. Its compact form makes it perfect for edging pathways, filling containers, window boxes, raised beds, and front-of-border plantings where larger zinnias would overwhelm the space.
Continuous blooms from summer until frost
The plants flower heavily throughout the growing season, creating a carpet of bright color. Regular deadheading encourages even more blooms, though Thumbelina naturally maintains a strong flowering display with minimal maintenance.
Pollinator-friendly flowers in a compact package
Despite its small stature, Thumbelina attracts native bees, butterflies, hoverflies, and other beneficial insects. It works exceptionally well in pollinator gardens where every square foot counts, providing nectar resources while adding vibrant color.
Excellent companion plant for vegetable gardens
The compact growth habit allows Thumbelina to fit easily between vegetables, herbs, and raised bed plantings. Its flowers help attract pollinators and beneficial insects while creating visual diversity throughout productive garden spaces.
