Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry (Amelanchier × grandiflora ‘Autumn Brilliance’)

Autumn Brilliance serviceberry is a flowering small tree with edible early-summer fruit and orange-red fall color. It fits an edible landscape where fruit, spring bloom, and wildlife forage share the same space.

Key Characteristics

An early fruit harvest

Purple-black berries develop a sweet flavor when fully ripe and can be eaten fresh or cooked. Birds often find them first, so harvest promptly or plan to share.

Food for fruit-eating birds

Serviceberries are eaten by birds including cedar waxwings and American robins. Early white flowers also give visiting bees a spring food source.

A small tree with a full seasonal sequence

White spring bloom is followed by fruit, then orange to red autumn foliage. Give it an open position with good airflow to limit leaf spots and rust while keeping fruit within easier reach.

Pollination Partners

A single tree can produce fruit; a genetically different serviceberry nearby may improve fruit set. This is a named cultivar, so a second Autumn Brilliance is not a genetically different pollen source. Cross-pollination depends on overlapping bloom, not matching harvest months.

Rootstock and Mature Size

Plan for approximately 15–25 feet at maturity, depending on site and pruning. Give the mature crown room for light and airflow.

General Serviceberry Orchard Guidance

A good start

Choose well-drained soil and enough room for the mature tree. Water consistently while roots establish, mulch with space around the trunk, and keep vigorous grass and other competitors away from the young root zone.

Fertility and fruit-tree guilds

Use a soil test to guide lime and fertilizer rather than feeding heavily by default. Our Tree Planting Kit fertilizer blend is an optional planting supplement; keep concentrated fertilizer away from bare roots and avoid excess nitrogen.

Interested in permaculture and stacking functions around your fruit trees? Explore our fruit-tree guild guide for ideas on combining plants for flowers, ground cover, and mulch while giving your tree room to grow.

Practical pest and disease care

Water during establishment, mulch without covering the trunk, and prune lightly to maintain an open crown. Watch for rust and leaf spots, especially in humid sites. Birds may take ripe fruit quickly; plan whether to share the crop or use wildlife-safe exclusion.
