Sourwood (Oxydendrum arboreum)
Sourwood adds drooping sprays of white summer flowers and red-to-purple autumn foliage to an acidic woodland edge. It is a small to medium native tree for a site that can protect its roots and meet its soil needs.
Summer Nectar and Small Habitat Spaces
Bees visit the bell-shaped flowers, and the nectar is the source of sourwood honey. As trees age, natural hollows can shelter small wildlife. Fallen leaves and undisturbed habitat below the crown help connect this tree with the rest of a woodland planting.
Choose the Soil Before the Spot
Sourwood prefers acidic, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Give newly planted roots steady moisture, and avoid compacted, polluted urban sites or a permanently waterlogged basin. Test pH rather than assuming that every native garden soil is suitable.
Allow a Tree to Develop
Young trees are easier to establish than moving an older specimen. Leave enough space for a roughly 20–30-foot tree, with room for its irregular branching and autumn display. Silver-gray seed capsules can remain after the leaves, extending winter interest.
