Starry Campion - Silene stellata
Starry Campion is a delicate and graceful native wildflower known for its airy clusters of white, deeply fringed, star-shaped blooms that appear like twinkling constellations in shaded woodlands and open forest edges. Native to eastern and central North America, Silene stellata thrives in part shade with rich, well-drained soils, making it a beautiful addition to woodland gardens, native plantings, and understory layers of permaculture systems.
This species has fascinating ecological relationships with nocturnal moths, which pollinate the blooms at night, and it serves as a larval host for several moth species. Its long, wispy flowering stems give it a light, ethereal presence in layered garden designs.
Key Characteristics
-
Delicately Fringed, Star-Like Blooms
The white flowers have deeply cut, feathery petals that give each bloom a starburst shape, blooming in loose clusters on tall, slender stems. They bloom mainly in the evening and are lightly fragrant, especially to night-flying pollinators. -
Supports Native Moths and Nocturnal Pollinators
Starry Campion is pollinated primarily by nocturnal moths, including sphinx moths and other native species. It also serves as a larval host for certain moths, adding biodiversity value to native and shaded gardens. -
Ideal for Woodland Gardens and Part-Shade Borders
Thrives in dappled light or morning sun, growing in rich, moist-to-average woodland soils. Its open form and mid-height make it ideal for naturalistic designs or layered understory plantings. -
Low Maintenance and Long Blooming
Once established, Silene stellata is easy to maintain. It blooms for several weeks in midsummer and will self-seed lightly in appropriate conditions, helping to establish perennial native gardens. -
Excellent for Layering and Naturalizing
Use in the herbaceous layer of food forests, native shade gardens, or along shaded woodland edges. Its vertical structure contrasts beautifully with lower groundcovers or ferns.
