Sweetshrub (Carolina Allspice) (Calycanthus floridus)
Sweetshrub gives a woodland border dark maroon flowers, aromatic leaves, and a broad, suckering form. Flower scent varies considerably among plants, from lightly scented to strongly fruity, so an unnamed plant should not promise one particular perfume.
Flowers for Beetles
Beetles are notable visitors to the dark flowers, adding a different pollinator relationship to a mixed native border. Place the shrub where you can approach the blooms and notice both the scent and the insects using them.
Fragrance with a Cultural Name
Carolina Allspice and Sweet Betsy are old names associated with the aromatic plant. Historical spice-like uses do not make it a culinary substitute for true allspice: seeds and other plant parts can be poisonous. Its useful role here is fragrance, flowers, screening, and garden structure.
Room for a Natural Colony
Allow the arching shrub to spread, or remove unwanted suckers along the boundary you want to maintain. Moist, rich soil and some afternoon shade are helpful on hot sites. Prune selectively after flowering, keep drought stress down, and leave room for the mature width. Deer resistance is useful, but not a guarantee against browsing.
