Violet, ‘Silver Gem’ (Viola walteri ‘Silver Gem’)
‘Silver Gem’ is a beautiful selection of Walter’s Violet, a southeastern native groundcover prized for its shimmering silver-mottled foliage and delicate violet flowers. Unlike many violets grown primarily for their blooms, this cultivar offers year-round ornamental appeal through its striking foliage while still providing valuable habitat and nectar resources for native insects. Its low-growing, spreading habit makes it an exceptional choice for woodland gardens, food forest understories, native groundcovers, and shaded pathways.
Key Characteristics
Silver-marbled foliage for season-long interest
The heart-shaped leaves are uniquely marked with silver veining and mottling, creating a luminous effect that brightens shaded gardens. Even when not in bloom, the foliage forms an attractive living carpet that adds texture and contrast beneath shrubs, trees, and taller perennials.
Host plant for fritillary butterflies
Like other native violets, Walter’s Violet serves as a larval host plant for several fritillary butterfly species, including the Great Spangled Fritillary (Speyeria cybele) and Variegated Fritillary (Euptoieta claudia). These butterflies depend on violets to complete their life cycle, making this plant an important component of native butterfly habitat.
Native groundcover for woodland and food forest systems
‘Silver Gem’ spreads gradually by rhizomes to form attractive colonies that help protect soil and suppress weeds. It performs exceptionally well as a living groundcover beneath fruit trees, along woodland edges, and throughout native shade gardens where it creates a resilient understory layer.
Early blooms support emerging pollinators
The small violet-purple flowers appear in spring and may continue sporadically throughout the growing season. These blooms provide nectar for early native bees and other beneficial insects when floral resources are still limited.
