The Sandbar Willow (Salix exigua) is a small, deciduous shrub or tree that is native to the sandy banks of rivers and streams in the western United States. It is a fast-growing plant that can reach up to 15 feet tall and 10 feet wide. The Sandbar Willow is a beautiful and versatile plant that is well-suited for a variety of uses. It can be used as a screen, hedge, or windbreak. The Sandbar Willow is also a valuable wildlife plant, providing food and cover for many different species of birds and animals. The bark of the Sandbar Willow has been used medicinally by Native Americans for centuries.

The Sandbar Willow is a dioecious plant, meaning that there are separate male and female plants. In order to produce fruit, a female plant must be pollinated by a male plant. The Sandbar Willow is wind-pollinated, and pollen can travel long distances. However, for best fruit production, it is recommended to plant at least one male plant for every three female plants. See our Pollination page for more information on cross-pollination varieties and requirements!
