Zeolite
Natural Mineral Soil Conditioner for Nutrient Retention and Soil Structure
Zeolite is a naturally occurring, crystalline mineral with a high cation exchange capacity (CEC) that enhances nutrient retention, improves soil texture, and supports microbial activity in both gardens and field systems. Known for its porous, sponge-like structure, Zeolite holds onto ammonium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium-making nutrients more available to plants while reducing leaching.
An excellent addition to vegetable beds, orchards, compost systems, greenhouse soils, and animal bedding compost loops, Zeolite is a long-lasting, regenerative soil-building tool.
Key Characteristics
-
Increases Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC)
Zeolite's cage-like structure binds and stores nutrients such as ammonium (NH‚„º), potassium, and calcium, slowly releasing them as plants need them. This prevents nutrient loss in sandy soils and enhances fertility in organic and no-till systems. -
How to Use in the Garden, Orchard, or Field
-
Garden beds: Apply 5-10 lbs per 100 sq ft and mix into the top 4-6" of soil.
-
Containers: Add 1-2 cups per cubic foot of potting mix.
-
Compost: Use 2-5 lbs per compost bin or pile to reduce odor and retain nutrients.
-
Tree plantings: Mix 1-2 lbs into the planting hole to stabilize nutrients and support root zone biology.
-
-
Improves Soil Texture and Water Holding
In clay soils, Zeolite helps break up compaction and improves aeration. In sandy soils, it adds water-holding capacity. This makes it ideal for extreme climates, raised beds, and regenerative landscapes. -
Enhances Compost Quality and Reduces Odor
When added to compost piles, Zeolite captures volatile nitrogen compounds (ammonia), keeping them in the pile and reducing losses. This improves finished compost nutrient value and controls smells-especially in manure-rich piles or chicken bedding systems. -
Long-Lasting and Non-Leaching
Unlike many amendments, Zeolite remains in the soil for years, continuing to support nutrient cycling and microbial habitats. Safe for all plants, soil life, and organic certification programs.
